Oral surgery is a branch of dentistry that addresses surgical and adjunctive treatment of disease, injuries and anomalies of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Common procedures include:

• Complex dental extractions
• Third molar “wisdom” teeth extractions
• Trauma
• Pre-prosthetic surgery

1. When should I go to the dentist to have my wisdom teeth extracted?

Generally, third molars usually erupt between 17 and 20 years of age. Sometimes, they may partially erupt or never at all. On rare occasions, they can be even absent. It is important that you continue yearly maintenance visit so that important information can be discussed between you and your dentist, leading to sound decisions. This often can anticipate and avoid serious complications.

Not all wisdom teeth need to be extracted. If they remain asymptomatic and no other risk factors can be identified, there is no need to extract them! We will instruct you on how to take care of them!

2. Is wisdom teeth extraction painful?

Wisdom teeth can be fully erupted, partially impacted or completely impacted. Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted can usually be extracted easily and there is usually minimal post-operative swelling.

3. What should I do if I have an accident and the tooth falls out?

If possible, gently clean the avulsed tooth and place it in Hank’s solution, whole milk or saline. Saliva and water are also good substitutes. The goal is to avoid dehydration of dental structures. Also, call us as soon as possible and we will fit you in for an emergency visit. The sooner you come, the greater the chance of saving the tooth.
